TerraClassicUSD (USTC), formerly TerraUSD (UST), was an algorithmic stablecoin on the original Terra blockchain (Terra Classic). It was designed to maintain a 1:1 peg with the US Dollar through a complex algorithmic mechanism involving its sister token, Luna (now LUNC). The algorithm allowed users to swap 1 UST for $1 worth of LUNA (and vice versa), which was intended to arbitrage opportunities to keep the UST price stable. However, in May 2022, the mechanism failed spectacularly, leading to a hyperinflationary spiral of LUNC and the catastrophic depegging of USTC, which lost nearly all of its value and remains significantly below its intended $1 peg. USTC is now largely a remnant of the collapsed Terra ecosystem, trading significantly below a dollar and considered highly volatile and risky. Its primary current status is that of a depegged algorithmic stablecoin on the legacy Terra Classic chain, a stark reminder of the risks associated with algorithmic stablecoin designs that rely heavily on market arbitrage and interconnected tokens without sufficient collateral or circuit breakers.
