BitShares (BTS) is the native cryptocurrency of the BitShares blockchain, a decentralized exchange (DEX) and financial smart contract platform. Launched as one of the earliest blockchain projects focused on decentralized finance, BitShares enables peer-to-peer trading of various assets, including cryptocurrencies, fiat-pegged stablecoins (BitUSD, BitEUR, etc.), and user-issued assets, without relying on centralized intermediaries. BTS is used for paying transaction fees on the network, staking to secure the network and participate in the delegated Proof-of-Stake (dPoS) consensus mechanism, and participating in network governance.
