Balancer is a decentralized exchange (DEX) protocol that enables users to swap tokens and provide liquidity, built on the concept of a weighted portfolio or index fund. Unlike traditional AMMs like Uniswap with 50/50 pools, Balancer allows for customizable pool weights (e.g., 80/20, 60/40) and supports pools with more than two tokens. This flexibility allows liquidity providers to maintain exposure to a wider range of assets and earn trading fees generated by swaps within their pools. Balancer's unique approach aims to reduce impermanent loss for liquidity providers in certain configurations. The native token, BAL, is the governance token of the Balancer protocol. BAL holders can vote on proposals that shape the future of the protocol, including fee structures, features, and integrations. BAL is also distributed as liquidity mining rewards ("yield farming") to users who provide liquidity to Balancer pools, incentivizing participation and protocol growth. Balancer seeks to be a highly flexible and capital-efficient platform for decentralized exchange and automated portfolio management.
